The problem
When an estate includes a vehicle, someone has to put a number on it — for the probate inventory, for the court accounting, and for the stepped-up basis the heirs will carry forward.
A book value printout is not that number. An executor who reports a value a beneficiary later challenges is personally exposed, and the difference between what an asset brought and what it should have brought comes out of their own pocket.
We write the report that stands behind the number.
We have no interest in what the car sells for.
Veride is affiliated with PCAP Motors, a licensed Massachusetts dealer. We disclose that plainly, and we run a hard firewall between them: Veride never appraises a vehicle that PCAP liquidates. One vehicle, one lane.
Our fee is flat and does not move with value. No commission, no percentage, no contingent compensation of any kind. That is what allows a fiduciary to document a genuinely arm's-length valuation.
What the report contains
- Physical on-site inspection — never a desk review from photographs
- Stated intended use, intended users, and effective date
- Documented comparable sales with sources, dates, and mileage
- A visible adjustment grid showing the derivation
- Photographic condition documentation, including defects
- Assumptions and limiting conditions
- Appraiser qualifications
- Signed certification of no present or prospective interest in the vehicle
Estate appraisals are almost always retrospective. The effective date is the date of death, not the date we inspect. Every Veride report identifies this explicitly and states what market data was analyzed as of that date.
