The short answer
An online estimator is fine for a common, late-model car. For a rare, classic, modified or privately sold vehicle, the number that matters comes from comparable cars that actually sold, adjusted for how yours differs. An independent written valuation gives you that, from $199.
Why online car value tools get it wrong
Instant estimators work from averages across thousands of ordinary cars. They cannot see your options, your mileage in context, your service history, a rare color, or a build. On a $15,000 commuter the miss is small. On a collector or modified car it can be tens of thousands of dollars.
A good valuation starts from completed sales of the closest comparable cars, not asking prices, and explains each adjustment.
When an independent valuation is worth it
Selling privately and need to set an asking price. Trading in and want to know if the dealer's offer is fair. Buying and want a second opinion on the price. Financing and the lender wants independent support. Settling an estate, a divorce or a dispute. Insuring a car for an agreed value.
In each case the point is the same: a number you can defend, from someone with no interest in the outcome.
What you get
A signed written report with the vehicle details, condition notes, the comparable sales used with dates and sources, the reasoning behind the figure, and the value range. For many cars we only need photos, the VIN, mileage and a short description. Delivery is typically within 48 hours of receiving what we need.
Need it certified for a court, the IRS or an insurer? Ask for a certified appraisal instead. Our guide on valuation vs certified appraisal explains the difference.
What it costs
A photo-based valuation starts at $199. A certified appraisal is $350, or $595 for classic, exotic and collector vehicles. Fleet and bulk work is priced per vehicle. The fee never depends on the value we reach. See full pricing.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find out what my car is worth?
Start with completed sales of similar cars, not listings or instant estimators. For rare, modified or older cars, an independent valuation uses sold comparables and adjusts for differences. Veride provides these from $199.
Is Kelley Blue Book accurate?
It is reasonable for common, late-model cars with lots of sales data. It is less reliable for rare, classic, modified or low-volume vehicles.
How much does a car valuation cost?
A photo-based valuation starts at $199. A certified appraisal is $350, or $595 for classic and collector vehicles.
Can you value a car I do not own yet?
Yes. We can give an independent opinion before you buy, which is useful for private-party purchases and out-of-state cars.
