From workhorse to collectible
The FJ60 (1980–1987) spent decades as a cheap, reliable off-roader before the market caught on to how few clean, rust-free examples were left. Today, well-sorted FJ60s — especially unmodified, low-rust, matching-drivetrain trucks — appraise well above what their original used-car pricing would suggest.
Because so many surviving trucks have been modified for off-roading (lift kits, locking differentials, winches, aftermarket bumpers), we treat "stock" and "built" FJ60s as separate markets with different buyer pools.
What actually determines value here
Frame and rocker-panel rust is the single biggest condition issue on a 39-year-old Land Cruiser, and it’s the first thing we inspect underneath. Beyond that, drivetrain originality, A/C functionality, and interior condition (dashboards crack, seats wear) all separate a solid driver from a top-tier example.
